THIS MONTH IN HISTORY | October
2003: In a historic gubernatorial recall election, California voters kicked out Democratic governor Gray Davis and replaced him with the former body-builder, then movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger.
1960: Democratic presidential candidate John F. Kennedy proposed the idea of the Peace Corps while addressing an audience of 10,000 students at the University of Michigan.
1945: On what's now known as United Nations Day, the UN Charter came into force. The UN was created at the end of World War II mainly to "save succeeding generations from the scourge of war." Its founders were five allies in that war: the U.S., Britain, France, China, and the Soviet Union.
